The Justice Family Group, a family-owned mining-and-farming company based in West Virginia, said it has acquired The Greenbrier Resort outright from CSX Corp. for $20 million However, Marriott International said it intended to continue seeking to purchase the resort's assets.
CSX chairman, president and ceo Michael Ward noted that "while this is an entirely different kind of transaction than expected, this is a great result for The Greenbrier, its employees, the community, and CSX. Mr. Justice has made his passion and enthusiasm for The Greenbrier very clear."
When the fabled but financially struggling resort filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy in March, CSX announced plans to sell the property's assets to Marriott. A Marriott spokesman told The Wall Street Journal that the company was surprised by the announced sale to the Justice Family Group and that it intends to continue pursuing its purchase of resort's assets. "We have a contract to acquire The Greenbrier Resort, and we intend to fulfill our obligations and expect our counterparties to do the same," the spokesperson told the Journal.
