Beijing Hoteliers Face Post-Games Slump

Having waved goodbye to their Olympic visitors, Beijing's hoteliers have to return to normal flow of activity now that the Games have concluded. Hotels across Beijing were only one third full by Aug. 21, according to data from Smith Travel Research Global. During the Games, the average room occupancy across Beijing was 79 percent; occupancy was still 75 percent the night of the closing ceremonies. This plunged to 42 percent the day after the Games and declined to 33 percent the following day. Average room rates also recorded a significant decline, falling from $483 on Sunday night to $300 by Monday, and declining further to RMB $196 on Tuesday, the lowest daily average recorded for August.
