The Blimpie sub-shop chain has unveiled a new restaurant design that features mid century modern design cues taken from the works of Charles and Ray Eames. The updated look was developed by 602 Design, and features classic photography on the walls that reflect “the fabric of everyday American lives, from musical instruments and cars to clothing styles, surfing and more,” the company said in a statement.
“The design radiates simple and modern style elements that will provide customers with a relaxed, inviting eating environment,” said Kate Unger, Blimpie's vice president of marketing. “Since our founding in 1964, we've been a part of America's culture. Our photography and elements in-store showcase all of the moments we've been a part of with our customers.”
The company said the new design will benefit future franchisees, as it costs between $25,000 to $75,000 less to build than predecessor designs. Existing franchise units have the option to retrofit their locations with all or part of the new design.
The new design has made its debut at a unit in Happy Valley, Ariz., and the company says 12 more locales featuring the new look will open in 2010. The Blimpie chain, which is owned by Kahala, currently consists of about 1,100 units across the U.S.
