Brazil is working hard to host the 2016 Olympics, and that may spell a major opportunity for hotel chains that want a foothold in Rio de Janeiro. Answering issues raised in an International Olympic Committee (IOC) report that Rio's room count would be “insufficient,” Brazilian officials pledged that 2,000 rooms would be built if Rio is wins its Olympics bid.
Reports indicate the city's revised accommodation plan now guarantees 48,000 rooms (which surpasses the 40,000 required by the IOC). It would meet that target with about 13,000 hotel rooms, as well as four new-build villages totaling 25,000 rooms, and accommodations onboard six cruise ships and in aparthotels. The city was already gearing up its hotel inventory in anticipation of the 2014 World Cup, which will be based largely in Rio.
