Eco-friendliness will be the order of the day when Burger King's first energy efficient restaurant debuts in Germany. Developed in cooperation with Wirsol Solar AG (Bad-Württemberg), the freestanding quick-service eatery will utilize cutting edge solar photovoltaic and wind energy technologies and renewable energy to power one-third of its energy consumption. And that, say Burger King officials, will reduce energy costs by 45 percent and cut CO2 emissions by more than 120 metric tons annually.

This ground-breaking restaurant will feature the Burger King 20/20 restaurant image of the future, which includes materials resembling corrugated metal, brick and concrete. Long-life LEDs will illimuniate both the interior and exterior. A new batch broiler, already in place in North American Burger Kings, will be incorporated into the new German unit—a move that's project to pare down electricity consumption by roughly 52 percent and costs as much as 90 percent. The restaurant will also have a solar-powered electric vehicle charging station for hybrid cars and a rainwater reclamation system for outside irrigation.
