Washington, D.C., is ramping up its lure as a mega-convention and leisure destination with the 300-acre National Harbor development in nearby St. George's County, Md. Included in the first phase of this waterfront "city complex" will be five hotels, a 250-unit Wyndham Vacation resort, restaurants, retail and entertainment venues.
Travelers and local residents got a preview of what's to come with the April opening of the $865 million Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center, right. Its 2,000 guest rooms (including 110 suites) and 470,000 square feet of meeting, convention and exhibit space make it the largest combined hotel and convention center on the Eastern seaboard.
Gensler's architectural design takes inspiration from the legacies of the historic mid-Atlantic region. Just walking through the hotel is a lesson in design history - from the full-size re-creations of a Federalist-style clapboard farmhouse and a red brick colonial mercantile shop to a steakhouse styled like a series of elegant Georgian row houses.
