P&O Cruises, Yachts of Seabourn lines to each add a ship

The world's largest operator of cruise ships is about to get even bigger: Carnival Corp. will add two vessels to its fleet in its current quarter. Slated to set sail shortly are the 3,100-passenger Azura, operated by Carnival's P&O Cruises unit, and the 450-passenger Seabourn Sojourn, a member of its The Yachts of Seabourn line.

The Miami-based company said the debut of those two ships, both of which will primarily cruise in Europe, “further its strategy of expanding its global presence.” Carnival, whose fleet currently totals 95 vessels under 11 brands, said that in addition to the launch of the Azura and Seabourn Sojourn, it will add nine other vessels to its fleet by May of next year.

Carnival detailed its fleet-addition plans in its earnings report for the first quarter of 2010. For that period, the company reported a net income of $175 million on revenues of $3.1 billion.
