Restored Lambs Club building to house luxury hotel
When it opens next spring, The Chatwal New York will seek to re-create the iconic glamour and style of 1930s Gotham. The Stanford White-designed building, in Manhattan's theater district, is being restored and modernized by architect/designer Thierry Despont. The circa-1905 building originally housed the Lambs Club, America's first professional theater club.
For the interiors, Despont is drawing inspiration from the famous Malletier (travel trunk makers) of the art deco period, celebrating travel pieces as finely crafted objet d'art. The hotel will also feature such recurring flourishes as angular nickel trim accenting glimmering jewel-toned glass.
The Chatwal Hotel New York is the brainchild of Sant Chatwal, chairman and ceo of Hampshire Hotels & Resorts. The 88-room New York property will mark the launch of a new luxury hotel brand, The Chatwal, with plans in the works for additional luxury properties outside London and in India.
