Queens site would include 3,000 hotel rooms

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is backing a proposal by the Genting Group to construct a 3.8-million-square-foot convention center at the Aqueduct Racetrack in Queens, according to a variety of published reports. That proposed complex would include up to 3,000 hotel rooms and would replace the Jacob Javits Center in Manhattan.

Cuomo, who endorsed the proposal by Malaysia-based Genting in his annual State of the State address, also said it was time to begin the process of amending the state’s constitution to allow for full-fledged resort-style casinos to be developed off Indian land. “We are surrounded by gaming,” Cuomo said. “And for us, this is not about chips and cards. This is about the jobs that the casino industry generates.”

Under the plan backed by Cuomo, the Javits site would be redeveloped to include housing, hotels and museums, along with continuing to host smaller trade shows.
