A top executive at Darden Restaurants Inc. says the casual-dining company could open more than 1,000 additional units in coming years, Nation's Restaurant News reports. Darden president and chief operating officer Andrew Madsen, speaking at a recent International Council of Shopping Centers event, said the operator of 1,800 restaurants under six brands (including Olive Garden and Red Lobster) has the potential to increase its base by roughly 1,000 units by exploiting its scale, a strong balance sheet and a culture focused on reducing expenses.
