A total of 17,000 square feet of event space received a $2.5 million upgrade at the 400-room Marriott in downtown Cleveland, including this grand ballroom foyer. Design firm Vocon replaced outdated mauve-and-teal color scheme with a vibrant palette anchored by a custom wool carpet bearing a large-scale pattern. Other major design elements within the space include:
- The foyer's furniture is "classic with a twist," says Mary Burkhardt, a senior project designer for Vocon. "The shapes are reminiscent of classic pieces, such as winged-back chairs and Tuxedo sofas, but with simpler lines for a more contemporary feel."
- The bar, shown here at the rear of the space, is movable, to give the room added flexibility. (To further free up space, several fixed marble planters were removed.)
- The two-story, floor-to-ceiling window offers a view of Cleveland's adjoining Veterans Memorial Plaza, and is visually enlivened by a lattice frame. These elements were retained from the space's original design.
- The light fixtures are another holdover from the room's previous incarnation. "The lights were custom designed when the hotel was built, and relate well to both its exterior and the updated interior of the building," Burkhardt explains.
