The North American cruise industry will eke out a 2.3 percent increase in passenger traffic in the coming year, thanks in part to ongoing innovations in shipboard experiences, a trade group predicts. In its 2009 forecast, the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) notes that while the expected passenger growth in the coming year is well below the average annualized growth of 7.4 percent the industry enjoyed during the past two decades, it nonetheless is positioned to weather the current economic storm. Helping lure passengers aboard are such new amenities as full-scale seagoing aquaparks, luxury spas with exclusive suites and increasingly sophisticated and diverse restaurant offerings, CLIA reports.
