Flooring trend snapshot: 2008

You can't tread too lightly on floor design. The move toward sleeker, more architectural furnishings opens up opportunities to explore new ranges of patterns, textures and colors. For a comfortable lifestyle look, check out the latest versions of warm color values. Gold tones, whether interwoven with rich, autumnal accents or art deco-inspired black patterns, look right against the natural wood and stone that frame so many hospitality spaces. Gray, especially when used with stripes or geometrics, suits edgier business environments. There's still an ample choice of neutrals (black, chocolate and vanilla). For more adventuresome clients, consider some of the interesting collections in rich art nouveau jewel tones. It's not just aesthetics that are changing. Manufacturers are rolling out sustainable, eco-friendly flooring that breaks new ground in terms of color and style. Look for carpets that are recyclable or made from recycled materials, and manufacturers who pick up (and, in some cases provide containers for) your recyclable flooring, ceramics and tiles produced with natural elements, and area rugs hand-made by local artisans. Even the designs themselves revolve around the earth with patterns and styles inspired by nature. So, expect to be floored by the possibilities.
