Walt Disney Co. has stopped work on the expansion of its amusement park in Hong Kong, but is moving ahead with a new resort in Hawaii. In the Far East, the company has halted all creative and design work on the planned expansion of Hong Kong Disneyland, the South China Morning Post reports. Disney said it took that step after being told by the government that there was no guarantee the project would move ahead.
"After two years of Disney investment in creative and design work and extensive negotiations with our partner, the Hong Kong government, we have not yet reached a final agreement to expand Hong Kong Disneyland," Disney spokesman Leslie Goodman told the newspaper. "The uncertainty of the outcome requires us to immediately suspend all creative and design work on the project."
Meantime, Disney has started preliminary site work at its first family destination resort in Hawaii. Scheduled to open in 2011, Disney's Ko Olina complex is to include 350 hotel rooms, 480 timeshare vacation villas, a pool and water play area, a spa, meeting space and a children's club.
