Work now focused on final detailing and theming
Disney Destinations announced that major structural work has been completed on its Aulani Resort & Spa, in Hawaii, which is slated to open at the end of August. Now, workers from Walt Disney Imagineers are working on the complex’s final detailing, theming and landscaping.
The project’s progression into its final phases was marked in a ceremony on the lagoon fronting the site of the resort, in which local crew members from Hawaiian Dredging Construction Co. Inc. exchanged gifts with Disney employees. (The construction crew received Mickey Mouse ears from the Disney workers in exchange for leis.) In addition, workers gathered on the sand to form the image of a traditional Aulani arch and then transformed it into the silhouette of Mickey Mouse.
The Walt Disney Imagineers are working to weave Hawaiian stories into the buildings, interiors, art and gardens of the 21-acre resort with the help of local architects, artisans and historians. When completed, the Aulani Resort & Spa will feature 359 hotel rooms and 481 two-bedroom equivalent Disney Vacation Club villas housed in two, 15-story towers. In addition, the complex will feature two restaurants, an 18,000-sq.-ft. spa, a wedding lawn, a conference center and extensive water activities, including a central swimming pool, 900-foot tube floating watercourse, wading pool, body slides, sunset-facing hot tubs a quiet adult pool, a snorkel lagoon, and a conservation pool.
