Downturn's Impact Differs for UAE Hotels

The global economic slowdown is having a decidedly different impact on two major destinations in the United Arab Emirates, according to a new report from STR Global. Hotels in Dubai experienced declines in RevPAR (revenue per available room) during the second half of 2008, while Abu Dhabi's RevPAR statistics continued to rise. STR, a lodging industry benchmarking and research firm, attributed that difference to the fact that Abu Dhabi "is a destination slightly behind the development cycle than Dubai and consequently experiencing less of a supply issue. It is weathering the storm somewhat better."
