Global sales jump 3.8 percent
The Golden Arches may be exiting Iceland, but they're driving sales elsewhere in the world. Fast food giant McDonald's posted 3.8 percent gains in global sales for the third quarter of 2009 versus the same period in 2009. Europe played a major role in that upswing, delivering a 5.8 percent increase year-over-year increase.
Jim Skinner, McDonald's ceo, credited the appeal of the chain's core menu along with a “favorable” response to the new premium Angus Third Pounders and McCafe espresso-based coffees for driving up U.S. sales 2.5 percent and amping up operating income 6 percent. However, Asia/Pacific, Middle East and Africa were the operating income stars for the quarter, posting gains of 21 percent in constant currencies.
Despite what he terms this autumn's “declining informal eating market around the world,” Skinner said he expects consolidated comparable sales to remain positive.
