The Embassy Suites Chicago Downtown Lakefront has installed a 720-sq.-ft. “living wall” in its multistory Sky lobby. Hilton Worldwide, the hotel’s operator, says the addition represents the company’s commitment to the environment.

The wall consists of 3,840 plants, including hardy neon, golden pothos, rabbit foot fern, rex begonia and arboricola.

“Not only is our green wall beautiful to behold, but it actively improves the lifestyle of people in urban environments, where the average person spends a majority of their time indoors,” says Syed Hasan, the hotel’s general manager.

The freestanding wall features an energy-efficient, computer- controlled irrigation system, and emits as much oxygen as 16 trees that are 14-ft.-tall.. The plants also absorb sound and help moderate the temperature and humidity levels in the hotel.

The wall was manufactured by GSky Plant Systems and installed by Ambius, an interior landscaping company.
