Grand Hyatt New York's Empire Ballroom will undergo a $12 million facelift beginning in July. Scheduled for completion in September, the renovation will encompass 18,000 square feet of ballroom, foyer and pre-function space.
Previously known as the Commodore Ballroom, the 92-year-old venue has hosted numerous events involving high-profile figures over the years, including Martin Luther King, John F. Kennedy and Bill and Hillary Clinton. Grand Hyatt officials say the update will respect and reflect the ballroom's history.
Guests will travel to the updated ballroom level via escalator surrounded by beaded glass drapery and color-changing LED lights. The new foyer will feature white marble and art glass chandeliers. Inside the updated ballroom, a series of cast-resin sculptures at different elevations will be lit from above creating a "champagne sky." Traditional airwalls are being replaced with wood-clad columns to separate five salon spaces. A permanent stage will extend out and retract when not in use.
