Damphousse wants to open 10 spas over next 10 years
Vincent Damphousse, a retired NHL star-turned-entrepreneur, plans to open one new spa in Canada every year over the next decade, the Vancouver Sun reports. The first of those properties, the $8.5-million Scandinave Spa Whistler, will open next month.
“Whistler is the biggest resort in North America so it's a natural for us to go there,” Damphousse told the Sun. “It has been on our priority list for a long time but it was very difficult to find a piece of land big enough for our needs.”
Damphousse said the new spa also hopes to capitalize on the fact it will be open in time for the 2010 Winter Olympics in the Vancouver area. Damphousse is also eying Vancouver and Branff as possible homes for other spas.
Damphousse owns a 25-percent stake in Quebec-based spa developer Gestion Riviere du Diable Inc., which also operates Finnish-style spas in Montreal, Mont Tremblant, Que., and a franchise spa in Blue Mountain, Ont. Another former pro hockey player -- Eric Desjardins -- owns another 5 percent of the company.
