Benjamin Moore’s 2012 color forecast sees the world through aqua-tinted glasses.

It’s not just the temperature that’s feeling a little less caliente right now. After the vibrant and saturated tones of years past ( think regal purple and just-short-of-shocking pinks), Benjamin Moore’s 2012 color of the year is Wythe Blue, a light gray-tinged blue-green. And, it’s not alone at this end of the spectrum. Elegant grays and whites also have a place in the grand color scheme of things. Tropical colors and earthy shades are still going strong, but the industry is taking note of the shift.
Many designers are attracted to lighter shades as today’s often smaller-scale projects need a way to look atmospheric without being stifling. They are also a standout choice in conversion projects. ““Blue is an excellent partner to various wood tones,” says Sonu Mathew, ASID, IIDA , senior interior designer, Benjamin Moore. Need a case study? Check out Anema E Cozze. The blue-tinted walls meld seamless with textures varying from red brick to a white reclaimed wall.
That versatility carries a quality of timelessness that the industry is enjoying playing with right now. Wythe Blue is actually from a historical color collection and would probably look just as much at home in the 18th century as in the 21st. Projects like Anema e Cozze drive the point home that these gentle shades pack quite a design punch.
