The Four Seasons Resort Hualalai has taken the wraps off a 15-month, $40-million upgrade that includes 20 new suites, an updated spa, and renovations to its beachfront bar, lounge and restaurant. The resort is on the Big Island's Kona coast.

Specific upgrades to the property include:

  • The resort's 20 new one- and two-bedroom suites have 1,150 to 1,950 square feet of indoor-outdoor living space. Designed by San Francisco designers Babey Moulton Jue & Booth in collaboration with Philpotts & Associates of Hawaii, the suites feature comfortable custom furnishings and the textures of Hawaii. Exotic woods, stone and natural textiles complement clean-lined furniture that is accented with traditional Hawaiian fabrics. Traditional and contemporary Hawaiian art graces the walls. Other amenities include slate bathrooms with steam showers and lanais off both the master bedroom and living rooms, maximizing the ocean views.
  • The 28,000-square-foot Hualalai Spa integrates tropical gardens with cool interior spaces and feels distinctly Hawaiian. The interior features dark tropical woods, high-pitched woven ceilings and dappled sunlight falling through bamboo screens.
  • The oceanfront Beach Tree restaurant features 16-foot-high vaulted ceilings, trellised seating for al fresco dining and an expanded outdoor lounge.
