Hilton Vienna Danube draws its inspiration from the aquatic surroundings

Our end-of-the-workweek eye candy series has covered styles from glitz to minimalism. Today’s entry is a little bit of both. JOI-Design’s vision for the Hilton Vienna Danube centers around streamlined, open-plan shapes, but with rich textures, elegant ornamentation and a strongly aquatic flavor.

The entrance lobby works in all these leitmotifs. Square, imposing columns frame the glass wall that looks out on the Danube. The Murano glass bubbles suspended from the ceiling reference both the flowing currents of the river outside and the sparkling ballroom décor Vienna is famous for.

Moving into the bar, the ambience becomes more urban chic, while keeping the clean lines and monochrome-heavy palette of the lobby. Backlit panels with multi-colored wine bottle bottoms keep the graphic theme and add a splash of color. The glass-clad columns reaching to the triple-height ceiling frame more crystalline balls.

The hotel plays into several key trends we’ve been seeing lately-dramatic architectural elements, quiet palettes and local inspiration—but there’s an original spin here with the contrast between straight and curved, simple and ornamented. It’s an exciting aesthetic balance.
