‘Glamping’ Adds Luxury to the Great Outdoors

(August 2008) posted on Tue Sep 02, 2008 EDT

Travelers who want an "outdoorsy" experience but can't bear the thought of being isolated in the wilderness with no running water or wireless Internet can take solace in a new travel trend--"glamping," or glamour camping. These upscale experiences, TravelMole.com reports, are for people willing to pay a premium to blend luxury with adventure. Among the businesses seeking to cash in on the trend is Clayoquot Wilderness Resort, in Canada's British Columbia, where deluxe white canvas tents set on raised platforms give guests the ambiance of the Canadian rainforest minus the "ick" factor of a traditional grounded tent. Fireplaces, four-poster beds with down duvets, antique furniture and rugs complete the accommodation, with private composting toilets.
