Call it a double dose of LEED: The new Hilton hotel in Asheville, N.C., is seeking Silver status under the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED program. In addition, the 165-room hotel sits in Biltmore Park Town Square, a mixed-use district that’s part of the LEED-ND (Neighborhood Development) initiative. That pilot program involves high-density, pedestrian-friendly developments that reduce sprawl, encourage healthy living, protect the environment and reduce dependence on automobiles.

The Hilton’s eco-friendly features include a rooftop solar panel system that heats all the hotel’s water, including that used in its swimming pool; low-flow toilets, showerheads and sink fixtures; and Energy Star-qualified CFL light bulbs. The hotel also employs a recycling program for both guests and employees, and select staff wear uniforms made out of regenerated plastic bottles.
