HAL Commits $200 Million to Ship Upgrades

(September 2008) posted on Fri Sep 19, 2008 EDT

With competition heating up, Holland America Line (HAL) has earmarked $200 million for renovations and enhancements on five of its ships. The MS Statendam, MS Ryndam, MS Maasdam, MS Veendam and MS Rotterdam will get a fresh look with the addition of new concepts, updated staterooms and new décor. One trend to watch will be the launch of spa staterooms. HAL is also rolling out a new-look pool, The Retreat, on the Lido deck.

Each ship will be outfitted with an additional 44 to 46 staterooms, 32 of which will have verandas. That still fits with HAL’s business model to avoid the mega-ship trend. "In an era when cruise lines are building ships to carry more than 5,000 passengers, Holland America Line remains focused on mid-sized vessels," says Richard Meadows, HAL’s executive vice president of sales, marketing and guest services. Work is expected to be completed by 2010.
