Helmsley Hotel in NY Gets Update

(June 2009) posted on Mon Jun 22, 2009 EDT

The New York Helmsley Hotel is undergoing its first major renovation, USA Today reports. The makeover of the 28-year-old property that Leona and Harry built involves its lobby, restaurant and bar, with the work slated for completion by this fall.

USA Today writer John Newton notes that The New York Helmsley "is one of a dying breed of hotels, namely large business oriented hotels managed by their owners and not affiliated with a larger hotel group. [General manager Mark] Briskin prefers the term ‘mega-boutique to describe the niche the property occupies."

Serving as lead designer on the project is Jeff Ornstein of J/Brice. Specific elements of the redo involve replacing the traditional reception desk with concierge-style check-in; installation of an 18-foot tall backlit alabaster wall that will run through the lobby; and the use of Brentano fabrics, Murano glass chandeliers and Bisazza mosaic tiles. The idea is "to give the lobby an opulent luxuriousness which respecting the clean lines of the early ‘80s design," Newton writes. "We expect the Queen of Mean [as Leona Helmsley was sometimes known] would approve."
