The renovated Hotel Union Square pays homage to the 96-year-old building's deep local roots. For example, there's a Dashiell Hammett Suite (the "Maltese Falcon" author was a big fan of the hotel) created by artist/interior designer Lisa Compagno.
The rest of the $5 million upgrade, by interior designer Riley Johndonnell, mixes the Personality Hotels property's original exposed brick walls, mosaic murals and opulent mouldings with sleek, modern furnishings and colors inspired by the Bay Area-including crimson (reflective of the Golden Gate Bridge) and gray (evoking the city's famous fog). Those design motifs extend to the hotel's hallways, which also feature mercury striped-globe lights by Toronto-based Viso that cast linear shadows reminiscent of the city's cable-car tracks.
