The new meeting-space wing at the InterContinental Chicago O'Hare Hotel is topped with a fully a functional "green" roof that's designed to cut heating and cooling costs. The 25,000-square-foot "Artists Wing" - so named for hanging sculptures that act as lighting fixtures within the space - features a roof consisting of interlocked trays of three-inch soil, wheat grass and sedum.
Officials at the 556-room hotel in the Chicago suburb of Rosemont, Ill., say the roof requires no maintenance, drastically reduces energy costs and will increase the life span of the roof to two to three times that of a typical industrial roof. The new wing also features wind-powered electricity.
