32-story hotel achieves green status as existing building
The 550-key InterContinental San Francisco was awarded LEED Gold certification for existing buildings operation and maintenance from the U.S. Green Building Council. The hotel is the third largest of 13 hotels in the nation to earn this distinction. In the process, it also earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star.
The hotel is the first InterContinental property to earn LEED gold for existing buildings status and the fourth LEED-certified site within the company's portfolio. “As part of the InterContinental brand family, we support ongoing efforts to be responsible and sustainable in every area of our business and through this achievement, we have demonstrated our commitment and dedication to environmental stewardship,” says general manager Peter Koehler.
The 32-story hotel's green features include floor-to-ceiling windows that maximize use of natural light in the building; an updated energy system, energy-efficient appliances and motion sensors for controlling lighting. “The work of innovative projects like the InterContinental San Francisco is a fundamental driving force in the green building movement,” says Rick Fedrizzi, president, ceo and founding chair, U.S. Green Building Council.
