Six-story Westminster property to open in late 2011
InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) announced it has signed a 20-year management contract with Splendid Hotel Group for a new six story InterContinental property in central London. The 254-room InterContinental London Westminster is set to open in late 2011, just prior to the Summer Olympics that the city will host the following year.
The new hotel will occupy the former Queen Anne’s Chambers, originally built in the 19th century. The 120,000 square foot site currently houses office and retail space.
“Despite the tough economic times the fact that we continue to sign major deals is testament to the strength of our brands,” said Kirk Kinsell, IHG’s president for Europe, Middle East and Africa. “We’re adding 5,000 rooms in the U.K. in the next two to three years.”
Splendid Hotel Group is an existing IHG franchisee, with Holiday Inn hotels in Manchester and London. The Westminster locale will be the second InterContinental hotel in the capital; InterContinental London Park Lane opened in 1975 and underwent an extensive renovation in 2006.
