Jerusalem Hotel Gets Government OK

(June 2009) posted on Wed Jun 03, 2009 EDT

Israel's Interior Ministry has given tentative approval for the construction of a new hotel in east Jerusalem, The Jerusalem Post reports. The proposed 200-room property would be built just outside the Old City walls on city-owned land.

The project, which has been 12 years in the planning, could still face opposition. The Post notes that Israel differentiates between building in east Jerusalem and the West Bank, but that the U.S. and the international community do not make such a distinction, and are opposed to any Israeli construction in either area. In addition, the newspaper noted that Palestinians are demanding all of east Jerusalem as the capital of their future state.
