Jet-Based Hostel Set to Debut

(January 2009) posted on Mon Jan 12, 2009 EST

An abandoned jumbo jet at a Swedish airport is being converted into the world's first airplane-based hostel, the Belfast Telegraph reports.

The Irish newspaper says the "Jumbo Hostel" -- an unused Boeing 747 at Stockholm-Arlanda airport -- will have 25 rooms measuring 65 square feet each that will be furnished with bunk beds, overhead luggage compartments and flat-screen televisions. A reception area and café are at the front of the jet, while toilets and showers are at the rear. The jet's upper deck "bubble" is being converted into a conference room, while the cockpit is being transformed into a wedding suite.

The hostel is the brainchild of Oscar Diös, 36, a Swedish entrepreneur who hopes the inexpensive and novel accommodation will attract flying enthusiasts and budget travelers. Diös said the jet-based hostel, which is slated to open later this month, already has 200 bookings.
