40-story hotel to get $13 million update
The Hyatt Regency in Kansas City will convert to the Sheraton flag after undergoing a $13 million renovation. The brand change at the 733-room property was announced by Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc. and the Crown Center Redevelopment Corp.
The 40-story hotel, site of a skywalk collapse 30 years ago, will become the Sheraton Crown Center on Jan. 1. Bill Lucas, Crown Center Redevelopment’s president, told The Kansas City Star that the announcement of the new franchise agreement was delayed until after the anniversary commemoration of the skywalk catastrophe at the hotel that claimed 114 lives on July 17, 1981.
“It was pretty well done two or three weeks ago, but in deference to the memorial services this past weekend we delayed this announcement,” he told the newspaper. “We didn’t want this to pre-empt or do anything to take away attention from that.”
The Sheraton Crown Center will join The Westin Crown Center as the second Starwood property in Crown Center, a mixed-use development on the southern edge of downtown Kansas City. Starwood will also operate the Crown Center Exhibit Hall and two restaurants in Crown Center shopping center.
