Jin Jiang International Group, China's largest hotel group, has appointed HBA/Hirsch Bedner Associates to manage the historical restoration/adaptation of Shanghai's landmark Peace Hotel, left. The renovated hotel reopens in 2010 as the Fairmont Peace Hotel Shanghai.

HBA's vision for the project draws heavily on the building's colorful past. Opened as the Cathay Hotel in 1929, this 12-story icon became "the most enduring symbol of the decadent international glamour of Shanghai in the 1920s and 1930s," says Michael Bedner, HBA's chairman and ceo. Although HBA intends to "re-create the Old World charm the hotel exuded when it opened," Bedner says, that won't mean guests have to give up the best of modern luxury. "A true restoration also means ensuring modifications are made so that the property once again becomes commercially viable and internationally competitive," he says.

HBA has appointed a historical consultant to assist with the restoration work to ensure it complements the historical context of the property. The firm's designers also are taking a lead role on the architectural renovation with Allied Architects International in Shanghai.
