Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is undertaking an ambitious effort to renovate the bars, fast-food outlets, restaurants, newsstands and shops inside its eight terminals, according to the Los Angeles Times.
"We want more variety, more dining and beverage opportunities, and better-quality food and service," Gina Marie Lindsey, executive director of the airport agency told the Times. "We need more cutting-edge, more contemporary and more L.A.-centric approaches."
The airport -- the nation's third-busiest, handling more than 50 million passengers a year -- currently houses several brand-name restaurants, including Wolfgang Puck, Karl Strauss and California Pizza Kitchen. However, officials say those concessions are almost 15 years old and need updating. Airport officials also want to reduce their reliance on a handful of master concessionaires, such as HMS Host Corp., Delaware North Cos. and Hudson Group, which have long-term contracts to manage most of the airport's beverage, food, retail services and bookstores.
