State may deregulate interior design industry
Florida is one of only three states that require commercial interior designers to get licensed, but a bill making its way through the Sunshine State’s legislature would end the practice. That possibility has run into major opposition from the state’s licensed interior designers, who have hired an influential lobbyist and “stormed legislative hearings to warn of the mayhem that would ensue if the measure passes,” The Wall Street Journal reported in a front-page article on the brouhaha. Proponents of the deregulatory measure, on the other hand, say licensing serves only to “choke off competition from upstart designers who lack degrees,” the newspaper reports.
