The global economic slowdown means "new hotel openings are now in the midst of a three-year topping out formation that will carry through 2010," Lodging Econometrics reports. In its most recent Global Construction Pipeline report, the real estate research firm said total openings for 2009 are expected to total 2,774 hotels/398,391 rooms, while 2010 is expected to bring 2,428 hotels/410,500 rooms.
Lodging Econometrics said the increase in the number of rooms opening next year is traceable to a substantial number of large-sized hotels opening throughout China for Expo 2010 in Shanghai, "as well as a final surge of large hotels set to open in European markets and throughout the Middle East region."
