London Park Plaza Marks Topping Out

(July 2009) posted on Wed Jul 22, 2009 EDT

The 16-story Park Plaza Westminster Bridge London hotel has been topped off, with the city's mayor marking the construction milestone by bolting its final beam. The 1,021-room property, being built on the former site of the Greater London Council building, is slated to open early next year.

"This impressive development has removed an awful eyesore that has blighted this corner of the capital for too long," mayor Boris Johnson said at the ceremony: "A sparkling new hotel is just what the South Bank needs. I am sure it will act as a major springboard for the regeneration plans for Waterloo Station and the surrounding area, on top of creating hundreds of jobs and boosting the local economy."

The new $575 million hotel will be owned and operated by Park Plaza Hotels, which also operates five other luxury hotels in the city.
