Deal could lead to expansion for the bankrupt burger chain
Luby's Inc. submitted a winning bid $61 million for the bankrupt Fuddruckers Inc. gourmet hamburger chain. The deal, which includes Fuddruckers' parent company Magic Brands LLC and some selected affiliates, is expected to gain final approval from the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware tomorrow and close on or before July 9.
Fuddruckers currently operates 60 Fuddruckers locations and three Koo-Koo-Roo locations, while franchisees currently operate an additional 138 Fuddruckers locations. Fuddruckers filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on April 21.
Magic Brands ceo Peter Large said Luby's -- which operates 96 cafeteria-style restaurants – “has the capacity to support and grow the Fuddruckers brand, which we believe will be to the benefit of both our corporate restaurants and franchisees,” The Wall Street Journal reports.
