Las Vegas hotel-casino slated to get renovation, expansion

Plans to renovate and expand the now-shuttered Sahara Hotel & Casino on the Las Vegas Strip are moving ahead, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reports. The Clark County Commission has approved a plan by Sahara owners SBE Entertainment and private equity firm Stockbridge Real Estate to renovate the complex’s casino floor and the guest rooms in its three towers. (Under the plan, the number of rooms at the hotel would be reduced slightly, from 1,700 to 1,622.) The owners’ plans also call for adding a beer garden, retail space, a restaurant, a nightclub and meeting/convention space.

The newspaper said it’s unclear when construction will start and how much the renovation project will cost. Earlier this fall, SBE said it had hired Gensler Architects and Las Vegas-based Penta Building Group to “evaluate a range of options” for the Sahara. That move came on the heels of the May closing of the complex.
