Marriott Hires Deloitte Exec … And More

HIRINGS/PROMOTIONS/EXECUTIVE CHANGES

Marriott International has hired Alex Kyriakidis as president and managing director of its Middle East and Africa (MEA) division, effective Jan.1, 2012. Kyriakidis, currently Deloitte LLP’s global managing director for Tourism, Hospitality & Leisure, will be based in Dubai. In addition, Marriott said president and managing director of international lodging Ed Fuller will retire from the company next March.

Castle Resorts & Hotels hired Barrett De Santosas senior director of domestic and international sales. De Santos joins the company from the Kahala Hotel & Resort. Castle also hired Chloe Rapozo, who recently earned her MBA from Willamette University,as its marketing and web coordinator.

OPENINGS/RENOVATIONS/BRAND NEWS

Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants opened a Hotel Palomar in San Diego’s historic Gaslamp district. The renovated 183-key locale was formerly the Se Hotel.

Hyatt Hotels Corp. has opened the 28-story, 343-key Hyatt Regency Jinan in the capital city of China’s Shandong province.

Harlequin Hotels & Resorts has opened Buccament Bay Resort on the island of St. Vincent, the Caribbean. The five-star resort features 95 luxury villas.

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) opened the 140-key Holiday Inn Cartagena Morros in Colombia.

Hilton Worldwide opened the 210-key Hilton Garden Inn Istanbul Golden Horn in Turkey.

Melia Hotels International has opened the 240-suite Melia Orlando Hotel at Celebration. The property formerly operated as the Mona Lisa Suite Hotel and features residentially styled one and two bedroom suites.

The 355-key Radisson Aruba Resort, Casino & Spa’s renovation is slated for completion in mid October. The $26 million project began in April 2010 and includes the resort's three guestroom towers and public areas.  

MANAGEMENT CONTRACTS/ACQUISITIONS

Hilton Worldwide signed a management agreement with B.P Pluto d.o.o. for the 152-key DoubleTree by Hilton hotel in Zagreb, Croatia. The hotel will open in spring 2012 as part of a mixed-use development.

BUSINESS BRIEFS

Carpet manufacturer Desso has launched an interactive website for its hospitality division. Site visitors can view products/services and design their own carpet in a virtual environment. For more information, visit www.desso-hospitality.com.

AWARDS

Tropitone Furniture Co. was named Manufacturer of the Year by the International Casual Furnishings Association at an awards reception at the School of the Arts Institute of Chicago on Sept. 13.

Laurence Geller, ceo of Strategic Hotels & Resorts, received the 2011 British Counsul General Award from the British-American Business Council Chicago (BABCC). Geller was recognized for more than 40 years of service to the lodging industry and his civic and philanthropic efforts around the world.
