Marriott Slates 57 New Hotels in Asia

Marriott International plans to build out its 109-hotel Asian portfolio with 57 additional properties by 2013. The 15,510 additional rooms will cover the company's brand spectrum from luxury JW Marriott and Ritz-Carlton to upscale Marriott and Renaissance, upper mid-tier Courtyard by Marriott and extended-stay Marriott Executive Apartments. According to Ed Fuller, Marriott's president & managing director for international lodging, 21 of the new hotels will be in China; 24 in India and eight in Thailand. The Maldives will see its first Marriott next year. Also scheduled for a 2010 debut is South Korea's first Courtyard-branded hotel. JW Marriott will premier in Vietnam in 2013.

The international pipeline is definitely the good news, with two more properties slated for Saudi Arabia as well. On the home front, the Sun Sentinel Fort Lauderdale, Fla. McMclatchy-Tribune Regional News reports developer Ocean Properties Ltd. has halted plans for its $100 million Marriott Ocean Village and Resort on Florida's Hollywood Beach. Sources quoted in the story say redevelopment officials are considering other options for the site.
