Sir Norman Foster to design hotel for Sol Melia flag
Spanish hotel/resort operator Sol Melia has chosen London as the site for its sixth ME Hotels locale. The 173-key hotel, which is slated to open in 2012 prior to the city's Olympic Games, is being designed by renowned British architect Sir Norman Foster.
Melia's plans for the ME London follows its May groundbreaking on a ME locale in Vienna. “With ME Vienna's recent announcement, we are excited about the rapid expansion of the ME Hotels brand,” said Gabriel Escarrer Jaume, Sol Melia's vice chairman and ceo. “A flag in one of the travel industry's most important feeder markets will not only strengthen ME's European presence, but will also bring unforgettable experiences to travelers from all over the world.”
Sol Melia says Foster is creating “a cutting-edge, contemporary design” for the London hotel, which will also feature two destination restaurants and some meeting space. The hotel will be located in the city's tourist and business center, next to Covent Garden and Trafalgar Square in the district of Holborn. It will occupy a triangular piece of land that previously housed the City Bank building.
Other ME locales are in Madrid, Barcelona, Cancun and Cabo.
