Northern Edge site to showcase Navajo arts and crafts
The Navajo Nation Gaming Enterprise (NNGE) said it will open its Northern Edge Navajo Casino near Farmington, N.M., on Jan. 16. The 86,000-sq.-ft. facility was designed by Las Vegas Friedmutter Group of Las Vegas and will showcase a variety of Navajo arts and crafts.
“The opening of Northern Edge represents a significant turning point for the economic health and prosperity for the Navajo Nation,” said NNGE ceo Bob Winter. “Northern Edge is expected to create approximately 374 full-time jobs with an annual payroll of $12 million, including salaries and benefits. Additionally, NNGE built a three-mile natural gas line allowing the Navajo Tribal Utility Authority to expand its gas services to residents in the surrounding area that were previously dependent on propane. Also, a new electric substation funded by the Enterprise will bring additional power to both residents and businesses needed for growth in the eastern region of the Upper Fruitland Chapter."
The casino complex was constructed by Arviso/Okland JV, a Navajo-owned joint venture, and will feature 750 slot machines, six poker tables and 10 table games, along with a full service restaurant, food court and gift shop.
NNGE also operates casinos near Gallup and Shiprock, N.M., and plans to open the Twin Arrows Navajo Casino Resort in August 2013 near Flagstaff, Ariz.
