San Francisco's Orchard Hotel has joined its sister property, the Orchard Garden Hotel, in earning LEED-EB certification for an existing building. The 9-year-old Orchard Hotel is the fourth hotel in the world to achieve that certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).

The 104-room Orchard Hotel gained LEED-EB status for managing energy use, sustainable cleaning and maintenance practices, employee education, recycling policies and energy-efficient lighting, water and material use.

"Orchard Hotel's LEED certification demonstrates tremendous green building leadership," said USGBC president and ceo Rick Fedrizzi. "The urgency of USGBC's mission has challenged the industry to move faster and reach further than ever before, and the Orchard Hotels serve as a prime example with just how much we can accomplish."

The Orchard Hotel and Orchard Garden Hotel are both members of Portfolio Hotels and Resorts collection.
