Napasai locale to get lagoon, underwater nature reserve

Orient-Express will close its Napasai beach resort and residences on the resort island of Koh Samui, Thailand, to create a 300,000-sq.-ft. crystal-clear lagoon and underwater nature reserve. The resort will be closed from May 15 to June 16 so that underwater rocks and dead coral will be removed to create a fine-sand lagoon in front of the hotel.

The project is being carried out under the supervision of the local marine authority, with the aim of encouraging marine life back to a nearby coral reef, parts of which have died over an extended period of time due to fluctuating water temperatures. The coral reef itself will not be touched during the work.

This project is the latest phase in Orient-Express’ investment in Napasai, which is sits among tropical gardens overlooking the Gulf of Thailand. Last year, the complex’s 14 private pool residences and 39 cottages were renovated; its private beach was expanded and a barbecue restaurant was added.
