Philippe Starck and Highgate Hotels play the fashion game in the Couture Suite
By Mary Scoviak
People are tired of feeling poor. Consumers have under-spent, under-partied, under-pampered themselves since the U.S. economy imploded in 2008. When they finally do open their wallets—either for business travel on the company T&E or for personal reasons—they don't want to dine or sleep in another ascetic cell. Mabye that's why the new Couture Suite at New York's Paramount Hotel look so good right now.
Designed by Susan Jaques, vice president of branding for the hotel's owner, Highgate Hotels, the 950-sq.ft. suite is glammed up with sparkling crystal chandeliers and white leather Cantoni sofas. The Great Room focuses on sharp contrasts: ebony-stained hardwood floors set against white walls. The vibe is intended to reflect luxury lofts—not only in the new dining area but also in the master bedroom, office den with its sleeping area and two bathrooms originally designed by Philippe Starck.
“I wanted to create a space that captured the iconic glamour that is the Paramount Hotel while remaining true to Philippe Starck's original vision for the property,” says Jaques. The Couture Suites is the second of 12 suites set to open at the Paramount. It follows the Entertainment Suite, also designed by Jaques. In addition to the latest in sound systems and HD-television, the 750-sq.ft. suite also features works by emerging New York artists.
The cost of luxury? Rates that start at $1,500 for the Couture Suite and $1,200 for the Entertainment Suite.
