Being green could help put hoteliers into the black, a PKF Capital executive told a San Francisco conference on green hotels. PKF managing partner Henry Bose said investing in renovations that make hotels more sustainable will increase their value, slash operating costs and attract customers who are trending toward more eco-friendly hospitality experiences. Bose said his company, and its consulting/research arm, are planning to produce a study on the issue. Meantime, he said statistics compiled by the U.S. Green Building Council related to its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification program demonstrate the benefits of going green. The USGBC found that large commercial buildings that are similar in size to hotel buildings and meet its LEED standards have recorded 30 percent energy savings, 35 percent less carbon output, 50 percent less water usage and as much as 90 percent less waste. USGBC also reported a decrease in operating costs of as much as 9 percent for such buildings and an increase of 7.5 percent in value and a 6.6 percent higher return on investment.
