The Queen Elizabeth 2 cruise ship is going to Cape Town, South Africa, for an 18-month stint as a floating hotel during the 2010 FIFA World Cup matches there, Travelmole.com reports. Dubai-based developer Nakheel, owner of the former Cunard flagship, originally planned to refurbish the ship and dock it at The Palm Jumeirah complex in Dubai. But those plans have been put on hold, while the ship docks in Cape Town's waterfront to help ease a shortage of hotel rooms during the World Cup.
"It has been our intention for some time to provide a short-term opportunity to enjoy QE2 as a stationary hotel in her current condition before refurbishment begins," a Nakheel spokesman told Travelmole. "It is clear that Cape Town provides the best opportunity for us to open QE2 to visitors as quickly as possible."
